First appearing at the turn of the 20th century, roller bearing trucks were in common use on passenger cars by the 1930s. Because of the additional cost, it wasn’t until the late 1950s and early 60s that they were widely used on freight equipment. Roller bearing trucks were required on new cars built after 1966. The Barber S-2, made by Standard Car Truck Co. was one of the most popular roller bearing trucks used.
