First appearing at the turn of the 20th century, roller bearing trucks were in common use on passenger cars by the 1930s. Because of the additional cost, it wasn’t until the late 1950s and early 60s that they were widely used on freight equipment. Roller bearing trucks were required on new cars built after 1966. American Steel Foundries (ASF) trucks was one of the most popular trucks in use, especially in the post World War II era.
