America’s first transcontinental railroad crossed the Rocky Mountains on Sherman Hill, a gently sloping natural pass through the mountain chain. The railroad improved its mountain crossing multiple times, as the map shows. “This is the only place in the entire Rocky Mountain front where you can go from the Great Plains to the summit of the mountains without snaking up a mountain face or going through a tunnel,” wrote geologist David Love.
